Neil Lamb, Ph.D., Vice President for Educational Outreach at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, spoke during our monthly call with Chamber members on April 6. Lamb gave an update on COVID vaccines, improvements in how many people are getting vaccinated statewide in Alabama and nationwide, and the recommendation to continue masking for a bit longer, even though Alabama's ordinance will be lifted.

A $28.6 billion restaurant and bar grant program will be made available soon. Members of the Independent Restaurant Coalition partnered with members of Congress to craft the legislation. While the Small Business Administration (SBA) prepares to stand up the program, businesses should take steps to organize the materials necessary to submit an application once it is available. There's good news about new providers coming online to offer COVID-19 vaccines. These include Walmart and Sam's Club pharmacies in selected locations, in addition to Huntsville Hospital continuing large-scale vaccination clinics by appointment. We have listed some other options as well.

This week, Huntsville Hospital is administering up to 2,000 COVID-19 vaccines per day at John Hunt Park, and we talked with two hospital administrators heading up this effort.

Huntsville Hospital is running a surge vaccination clinic by appointment only this week at the Jaycee Building at John Hunt Park, with Huntsville Police helping direct traffic flow. The hospital is aiming to vaccinate 1,800 to 2,000 people per day.

Governor Kay Ivey issued her twenty-second supplemental emergency proclamation extending the Safer at Home Order that includes a statewide mask requirement. Individuals will be required to wear a mask or other facial covering when in public and in close contact with other people, as described in the order. This order extends until Friday, March 5, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.
