Calhoun Community College Athletics Department has announced Derrick Powell, Jr. as the new head coach for the college’s men’s basketball team.
Powell most recently coached at Tuskegee University as an assistant and recruiting coordinator for nearly three years. Prior to that he was the head coach at the Montgomery Knights MLB in 2020, Wetumpka High School Class 6A 2017-2019, and The Calhoun School Class 2A 2016-2017. He was won several awards for his teaching and coaching, including the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Central Alabama Basketball Official Association Coaching Sportsmanship Award. He has over 15 years of experience and has coached players like Cortney Forston, Dionte´ Ferguson, Clifford Thomas, Gregg Boyd, and 2x Mr. Alabama Jaderious “JD” Davison.
Powell, United States Navy veteran, also created the Coach P’s iCAMP and the BIG (Boys Into Gentlemen) Mentoring Program in 2014.
