The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) would like to recognize Azita Amiri, Ph.D., MPH, CPH, RN, FAAN, a dedicated public health advocate and nurse scientist. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a Fellow at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health. As a registered nurse, she holds certifications in public health, risk sciences, and public policy. Dr. Amiri is committed to leveraging emerging technologies to enhance public health, which positions her as a leader in innovative initiatives aimed at advancing health equity.
As a pioneer in environmental health and justice, she addresses the intersection of public health, community engagement, and environmental issues. Her work empowers disadvantaged communities to advocate for their health, particularly through the involvement of young advocates in high schools. This approach has advanced public health initiatives and underscored the importance of integrating community voices into public health practice.
Dr. Amiri joined the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) College of Nursing in 2012. Since then, she has conducted research to promote public health in Alabama, educated nurses on delivering high-quality health care, and trained communities to mitigate environmental risks. As a tenured full professor, she was recently appointed Associate Dean for Research at the College of Nursing at UAH. In this role, she is dedicated to enhancing nursing science and improving the health of Alabama’s communities by supporting nursing faculty and students in submitting local, state, and federal grant applications and engaging community organizations in implementing various projects.
Currently, Dr. Amiri is leading several funded grants as the principal investigator, all aimed at improving the health and well-being of communities in Alabama.
