Calhoun Community College is proud to announce the appointment of Marchia Oates as the Director of Advising and Retention. Marchia officially joined the College on January 2, 2024, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to this vital role.
In her new position, Marchia will coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive advising and retention program. This includes overseeing student advising, retention efforts, orientation programs, first-year experience initiatives, and graduation support. She will also supervise the College’s freshman orientation and advising programs. Beyond administrative responsibilities, Marchia is charged with maintaining and updating advising materials, providing training, staying informed on trends and best practices in student support, and cultivating relationships both internally and externally to enhance the College’s connection to the community.
Marchia’s impressive professional background includes over two decades of experience in higher education and organizational leadership. Prior to joining Calhoun, she served in several key roles at Northwest-Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals, AL. From 2013 to 2023, she worked as the Coordinator of the Student Success Center, where she supervised staff, taught orientation classes, implemented academic support programs, and advised students. She also held the role of Coordinator of Student Life from 2000 to 2014, managing student life activities, coordinating orientation programs, and supervising the college’s residential complex. Additionally, Marchia has over a decade of teaching experience as an Adjunct Psychology Instructor.
Marchia’s academic achievements are equally impressive. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Master of Science in Personnel Administration from Alabama A&M University in Normal, AL, graduating with distinction. She is also a graduate of the Alabama Community College Leadership Academy (Class of 2014).
Her professional affiliations include membership in NACADA (National Academic Advising Association) and the Alabama Community College System Advisors Group, reflecting her dedication to best practices and continued professional development in advising and retention.
