Melissa Amaya of southeast Huntsville is the new owner of Blinds and Borders. She recently bought the company from Philip Hopson, who served the community for over 28 years.
Blinds and Borders is a local, independently owned window treatments business, dressing over 10,000 windows for 1000+ clients over the last few decades. Melissa carries forward the torch of exceptional customer service and community involvement.
With the purchase of the business, Melissa leaves behind a career as a software engineer for companies such as Amazon and GitHub. She also has experience teaching students from middle school through University in the fields of math, logic and computer science. Melissa holds a bachelor’s degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in Computer Science from UPenn. She brings her business background and systems thinking to the running of Blinds and Borders.
Melissa is mom to four children. Her oldest is a cadet at the US Military Academy. Her second born is a freshman at UAH, majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Her two youngest (ages 16 & 14) are involved in multiple aspects of the business. A motivating factor in the career shift from employee to business owner was to expose her two sons to business ownership and entrepreneurship.
Building on the legacy built by Hopson, Melissa brings new energy and a multi-generational vision for Blinds and Borders. The company looks forward to seeing the Amaya family continue to serve Huntsville area families in beautifying their homes with custom blinds, shades and shutters.
