Now Hiring: All 3 Local School Systems Have Urgent Need for Substitutes

November 9, 2020

Our three local school systems are all feeling the pinch when it comes to hiring needs. Huntsville City Schools, Madison City Schools and Madison County Schools all need to fill substitute teacher, bus driver and after-school staff positions.

If you are looking to become a substitute teacher for Huntsville City Schools, this document walks you through the application steps.

Before applying, you should gather the following information/documents:

  • High school/college transcripts (as applicable)
  • Teaching certificate (if available)
  • References will be requested as part of the application process
  • Optional: Resume

To learn more about career opportunities at Huntsville City Schools, visit their careers page.

Madison City Schools substitute teacher information can be found here. Due to COVID-19, they have extended the job posting for new substitutes through December 2020. Information on the application process, pay scale, and additional information about the positions can be found at the bottom of the web page.

  • Cheryl Davies (cydavies@madisoncity.k12.al.us) is the contact person for people interested in substitute teaching. Debbie Leeth (dgleeth@madisoncity.k12.al.us) is the contact person for anyone interested in being a substitute bus driver.
  • Currently, Madison’s after school program is not available, and they are not sure when it will resume. When it does resume, individuals would need to contact the elementary school in which they are interested in working at (all elementary schools have a program).

Madison County Schools are also looking to full substitute teacher positions. More information can be found on their website. To be eligible to substitute in a certified position, you must have a Substitute Teacher’s License or Professional Educator License on file at the Madison County Board Of Education Personnel Office. You can pick up an application packet from the Principal’s office of any Madison County School or from the Central Office on Jordan Road.

The local YMCAs are also hiring for their program that is in partnership with the Huntsville City Schools’ After School Program. After School Enrichment positions are responsible for the day-to-day operations of activities in the school-based program. You can see a full list of the YMCA’s open positions here.
