MONTGOMERY – On Friday, May 8, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced that several restrictions will be eased in our state’s “Safer at Home” order starting this Monday, May 11. This includes the ability for restaurants, bars, salons and gyms to reopen, but they must take precautions to do so safely. Here are some of the key points:

• Restaurants, bars and breweries may open at 50% of their maximum capacity, allowing a minimum of six feet between tables, and subject to additional sanitation rules and guidelines. They are encouraged to continue to offer curbside/delivery.
• Hair salons, barber shops, nail salons and other close-contact service providers may open subject to social-distancing and sanitation rules and guidelines.
• Athletic facilities (gyms) may open subject to social-distancing and sanitation rules and guidelines. Community athletic events (such as little league games and professional sports) are still prohibited.
• Non-work gatherings – the 10-person limit is removed. People are still required to maintain 6-feet distance between persons not from same household.

Gov. Ivey and Dr. Scott Harris, Alabama Public Health Officer, encouraged people to continue to take precautions, and exercise personal responsibility in slowing the spread of the virus and traveling outside of the home.

“Because I know how the people of Alabama are responding, and paying attention while heeding the good public safety & health warnings, Dr. Harris and I are comfortable that we’ll be able to continue a measured approach,” said Gov. Ivey.  “But let me be crystal clear with the people of Alabama — the threat of this disease continues to be active and it is deadly. We have lost friends and family members to this virus, and more than 369 of our fellow Alabamians have died.”
