The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize June 19th, better known as “Juneteenth.”

On January 1st, 1863 President Lincoln announced the “Emancipation Proclamation”: freeing slaves in the United States. While that date was a historic and emotional day for the four million slaves in the United States, it was not until two years later that slavery officially ended.

On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that the war was over and that slaves were free by order of the President of the United States. The term “Juneteenth” was coined and celebrations began recognizing the process and successes of African Americans’ freedom.

Juneteenth is a vital commemoration that provides everyone an opportunity to learn about the historical significance of this event and continue to bring awareness to and appreciation for African American history and culture.
