Full Bio of Dr. William Tapscott:
William Tapscott, MD is a board-certified general surgeon, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and member of the American Vein and Lymphatic Society.
Dr. Tapscott is a 1989 magna cum laude graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He served as the chairman of the Student Judiciary during his senior year. Later, he served the college through participation in the Edward Lee Norton Board of Advisors for Management and Professional Education.
Dr. Tapscott completed a general surgery residency at the Baptist Health Systems of Alabama(BHS) – Princeton and Montclair Hospitals where he received the Hugh Linder Award as the outstanding surgical resident during his chief year.
After residency, Dr. Tapscott was appointed as the Associate Program Director for the BHS General Surgery Residency Program. He served in this capacity for five years until he was selected as Residency Program Director. During his seven-year tenure as Program Director he doubled the number of residency positions and assisted in the transition of the Carraway Hospital surgical residents after the closure of the hospital.
Dr. Tapscott has served the American College of Surgeons as a member of Committee on Applicants for the Alabama Chapter. He is currently the Chairman of the Committee on Cancer for the American College of Surgeons for the hospital.
Dr. Tapscott was elected to the Board of Directors for the Jefferson County Medical Society and served on the society’s Medical Ethics Committee. He also served on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS) Network 8 Review Board for the states of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee which provides services to kidney failure patients and their providers.
Dr. Tapscott has been a member of the Peer Review Committee for Ascension-St. Vincent’s Hospital for the last fourteen years. He participated as a Clinical Professor for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Physician’s Assistant Program from 2001 through 2022. He is the National Medical Director for the Acute Care Surgery service line for TeamHealth and serves as the Facility Medical Director for the Acute Care Surgery program at Ascension-St. Vincent’s Hospital, Birmingham.
Dr. Tapscott has been in private practice general surgery for 26 years at the former Baptist-Montclair Hospital and most recently Ascension-St. Vincent’s Hospital-Birmingham. He has expertise in venous disease and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, as well as experience in the treatment of chronic venous stasis wounds during his tenure at the Ascension-St. Vincent’s Advanced Wound Center.
