HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Tuesday, Dave Hargrove and Liz Hurley were named the dual winners of the 2017 Distinguished Service Award. This is the highest individual award given by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, and this year marks the first time for it to be presented to a married couple.
We present the award each year at our Annual Membership Meeting, where we talk about the past year’s accomplishments. The recipient is our community’s best representation of ourselves. Through the years, this award has been presented to a wide variety of people who have made lasting impacts in diverse ways. Some have been recognized for their business leadership, some for their community service, and others for their life-long passions.
The winner is chosen by the Chairman of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, and this year, 2017 Chairman Joe Newberry selected Hurley and Hargrove. This was his last act as Chairman before he handed over the gavel to 2018 Chairman Gary Bolton.

Liz Hurley: Anchor, WAFF 48 News
Among her many achievements, Liz has been recognized twice as the Best News Anchor in the State of Alabama by the Associated Press. She has garnered two Emmy nominations for outstanding work in her field. In 2001, she was given the honor of being one of America’s “Coolest Women.” In 1996, Liz served as anchor and reporter for NBC News Channel during the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Hurley is also a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with the disease in August of 1998. Believing that “knowledge is power,” she personally counsels women of all ages and is a frequent speaker for civic treatment and recovery. She established the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund through the Huntsville Hospital Foundation, and to date the fund has raised over $3 million.
Among Liz’s many community service accolades are the Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity award and the Girl Scouts Woman of Distinction Award and the Community Service Citation from Interfaith Mission Service. She also started one of the country’s first regular on-air homeless animal adoptions segments in a local television newscast.
Dave Hargrove: Regional Director, AT&T Alabama Government & External Affairs
Hargrove has many examples of leadership and community service. He is the past chairman of several organizations, including the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, the Huntsville Committee of 100, the United Way of Madison County, Leadership Huntsville/Madison County, The Schools Foundation, and the Business/Education Coalition of Huntsville, Madison and Madison County.
He is also Past President of the Rotary Club of Greater Huntsville.

Liz and Dave are happily married and have two children, Jordan and Olivia.
